Modifications
My Ttype has a few modifications, though only a few increase performance. when you look at it under the hood, you think its got more mods than it actually does. First of all, it is a 3.8 L Turbocharged and Intercooled V6. Mine is a 84 model, which came with a non intercooled turbo motor, but now has the intercooled powerplant.
Stock, Cars Illustrated got the car to run 13.8 at 101 mph, with 4.9 second 0-60 times, straight off the show room floor. they were good drivers, but most people can make the cars go 13.9 to 14.1 easy. The GNX was the baddest of all Turbo Buicks, running 13.2 at around 103 or so. It was a special version that was very rare, and had a different rear suspension, different wheels and fender flares, and a different computer chip and a few small differences to the turbo and intercooler.
My car sports a different chip, which helps out alot. Probobly the best mod. Next it has a aftermarket exhaust system, which is 3 inch duals with Dynomax mufflers, also, I gutted the cat, and the downpipe has been upgraded to get rid of a restrictive kink at the end of the stocker. It has a external wastegate, which doesnt add any power, but adds better boost control ability over the stock setup. It has hooker headers, which harm power actually due to their large primary size and such long tubing, which cools the exhaust and keeps the velocity low---not what you want in a turbo motor. On the intake side, it has a 14 inch cone K&N filter to help air flow, a stock turbo which was recently rebuilt and that i have pumping out 17 pounds of boost right now, stock is 15, and the stock intercooler and throttle body. I knife edged the intercooler and throttle body to get rid of turbulence in the air flow path, which equates to better air flow. It has a adjustable fuel pressure regulator to help tuning, and has a larger fuel pump, since the stock one is not adequate for a stock car hardly. The fuel injectors are stock replacements but they have been used into the 11 second range. I will be upgrading to 55lbs per hour injectors soon, and using a different chip, and a bigger intercooler to help cool the heated air from the turbo. I am also in the process of hooking up Alcohol injection onto my car. This will help to cool the air even more, which will give added horsepower, and allow me to run much higher boost without detonation on pump gas. Hope to see 25 psi soon. that should add a bunch of power, as on these cars, 1 psi is worth around 12 hp as long as there is no detonation. Also, i will need to upgrade turbos sometime, As the stock one becomes inefficinet after 22 psi boost. Keep watching this page!
My GS
I have restored my GS back to the factory correct conditions. It took over 3 years to do, but it has turned out very nice. The car was in good condition to begin with, with zero rust, and a excellent body, with only a few dents here and there. I have not done any mods for performance to the car, but have done some to save gas. I installed water/alcohol vapor injection, a carburetor rebuild with a few mods inside, a homeade version of the condensator(www.condensator.com), a homeade carburetor enhancer from www.eagle-research.com, and a few other little things which help. It got 20 stock, and should get close to 30 after everything is working properly. pretty impressive for a V8 huh??
The GS Buicks were not slow cars either. The 70 GS Stage 1 could easyly hang with the cars you all hear so much about, the 70 Hemi Cuda, and the 70 LS6 Chevelle and all the other musclecars of the day. The GS Stage 1 is in the to 5 Fastest Musclecars ever, clocking a amazing 13.38 at 105.1 mph on 14 inch skinny bias ply tires in Motor Trend magazine in 1970. These cars also dominate the Musclecar Shootouts, where supertuned factory appearing musclecars gather at the dragstrip and race to see who the fastest is. Not many can hang with them when tuned up the way they are, and it has become quite a controversy and many are crying foul. Hey, maybe instead of screaming because you lost, why not give Buicks some respect instead of trouble??
I am working on coming up with a Twin Turbocharged 455 Buick motor, which should really do well. Stay tuned for more info.
